RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Christy S. Berkos has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-five; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Cicero, the Honorable Christy S. Berkos was a retired Cook County Judge and the loving and devoted husband of Rita; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Christy S. Berkos was the much-adored father of Kim, Cindy, and Daniel, to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities which he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Christy S. Berkos was the beloved grandfather of two; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Christy S. Berkos served in the Navy during World War II before earning his J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Christy S. Berkos served for twenty-three years as Cicero's town attorney, during which time he met with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. to broker an agreement which would eliminate the need for an organized march protesting segregated housing in the community; and
WHEREAS, Despite the agreement, civil rights splinter groups conducted a march and the Honorable Christy S. Berkos became responsible for overseeing security concerns for that 1966 protest; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Christy S. Berkos was elected Cicero's Town President in 1976 and served one term before being elected a Cook County Judge; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Christy S. Berkos will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends, and colleagues; and
 
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Christy S. Berkos imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighteenth day of May, 2011, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Christy S. Berkos for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Christy S. Berkos.
