SALUTE TO 2011 GOLDEN APPLE AWARD WINNER MARK DEVON HANS
WHEREAS, Marc Devon Hans, a General Science teacher at Hansen Elementary School in the 37th Ward who has consistently been able to positively impact the lives of students, families and staff on a more comprehensive and broad-based scale, is one of the 2011 recipients of the prestigious Golden Apple Award; and
WHEREAS, Every year since 1986, the Golden Apple Foundation selects 10 outstanding teachers who exemplify the highest standards and practices of the teaching profession to receive their prestigious Golden Apple Award. Now in its 25th year, the Golden Apple is seen as a great achievement by educators, city and state officials and the entire community. The Golden Apple Foundation award-winning teachers' qualities include, but are not limited to, demonstrating distinguished classroom practice as well as a high level of professionalism and educational cooperation; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the last decade of committed educational excellence, Marc Devon Hans has provided considerable opportunities for students to develop their various capacities. His accomplishments are important and awe-inspiring. In his decade of teaching, most of which has been spent as a sixth grade science teacher at Hansen, he founded the after-school "Science First" Club and also coached the team that recently won the 'Most Spirited' award at Chicago Public Schools (CPS) Science Olympiad Tournament. The recipient of numerous awards and honors, he is also a gifted grant writer and recently won a $10,000 grant. Additionally, he has served on the CPS Advisory Board to the CPS Chief Executive Officer; and
WHEREAS, Hansen Elementary adheres to the concept of "Excellence in Education" where holding their teachers to a high standard is of the utmost importance.
