RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Mildred Dalton Manning has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of ninety-eight; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Mildred Dalton Manning was the last known military prisoner of war of World War II; and

WHEREAS, Born July 11, 1914, on a farm in Barrow County, Georgia, Mildred Dalton Manning graduated from nursing school in 1937 at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta and joined the United States Army Nurse Corps; and

WHEREAS, Just six weeks before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Mildred Dalton Manning transferred to the Philippines; and

WHEREAS, During the Battle of the Philippines, Mildred Dalton Manning became known as one of "Angels of Bataan and Corregidor" for her efforts caring for troops at an outdoor clinic at Bataan and in an underground tunnel on Corregidor; and

WHEREAS, When United States forces were overrun by the Japanese in 1942, Mildred Dalton Manning was one of seventy-seven nurses taken prisoner; and

WHEREAS, While continuing to serve as a uniformed nurse caring for fellow prisoners, Mildred Dalton Manning suffered malnutrition and disease until the prison camp was liberated by a United States tank battalion on February 3, 1945; and

WHEREAS, In 1945 Mildred Dalton Manning married journalist Arthur Brewster "Bruce" Manning, who rose to become Managing Editor of the Florida Times-Union newspaper; and

WHEREAS, Mildred Dalton Manning and her husband lived for forty years in Jacksonville, Florida; and

WHEREAS, Mildred Dalton Manning was the much-adored mother of James and March, the grandmother of five and the great-grandmother of one; and

WHEREAS, The bravery, sacrifice and dedication of Mildred Dalton Manning serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, Mildred Dalton Manning will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Mildred Dalton Manni...
