RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, R. Dillon Smith has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of seventy-one; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, R. Dillon Smith was a retired member of the broadcasting community and the loving husband of Patti; and
WHEREAS, R. Dillon Smith was the much-adored father of Kevin, Colleen, Lisa and Kerry and the grandfather of ten to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Raised in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, R. Dillon Smith came to Chicago to attend Northwestern University where he earned undergraduate and master's degrees in journalism and a law degree; and
WHEREAS, Following graduation from law school, R. Dillon Smith worked as a news producer and reporter for WTIC-TV in Hartford, Connecticut; and
WHEREAS, During the 1970s and 1980s, R. Dillon Smith was the editorial and program director of WMAQ-TV in Chicago; and
WHEREAS, R. Dillon Smith won five straight Chicago Emmy Awards for editorials from 1975 through 1979; and
WHEREAS, After concluding his tenure at Channel-5, R. Dillon Smith founded Dillon Smith Communications, a Chicago-based television production company; and
WHEREAS, Following a long and illustrious career, R. Dillon Smith retired to Florida in 1996; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of R. Dillon Smith serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared R. Dillon Smith to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, R. Dillon Smith was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, R. Dillon Smith imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of April, 2013, do hereby commemorate R. Dillon Smith for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of R. Dillon Smith.
