RESOLUTION


WHEREAS, Anne Smedinghoff has gone to her eternal reward at the age of twenty-five; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Anne Smedinghoff lost her life while serving her country as a diplomat in southern Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, Raised in River Forest, Anne Smedinghoff was the much-adored daughter of Thomas and Mary Beth; and

WHEREAS, Anne Smedinghoff was a parishioner of St. Luke's Catholic Church and attended Fenwick High School in Oak Park; and

WHEREAS, Anne Smedinghoff entered the U.S. foreign service after graduating from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland; and

WHEREAS, The diplomatic mission of Anne Smedinghoff in Afghanistan focused on helping women and working with schools and local businesses; and

WHEREAS, Anne Smedinghoff was killed by a suicide bomber while she was riding in a convoy in Zabul Province to deliver text books to school children; and

WHEREAS, Anne Smedinghoff was a highly positive individual of great generosity and compassion who encouraged others to embrace each day; and

WHEREAS, Anne Smedinghoff began her diplomatic career in Caracus, Venezuela and displayed a great passion for her work; and

WHEREAS, The sacrifice and dedication of Anne Smedinghoff serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, Her love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Anne Smedinghoff to her family members, friends and all who knew her, and enabled her to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, Anne Smedinghoff will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Anne Smedinghoff imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of April, 2013, do hereby commemorate Anne Smedinghoff for her grace-filled life and do hereby exp...
