RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, The Right Honorable Margaret Thatcher has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, The Right Honorable Margaret Thatcher was the loving wife of the late Denis and the much-adored mother of Carol and Mark; and
 
WHEREAS, The Right Honorable Margaret Thatcher was the longest-serving British Prime Minister of the 20th Century and the only woman to hold that office; and
 
WHEREAS, The Right Honorable Margaret Thatcher was a member of the Conservative Party and served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990; and
 
WHEREAS, The Right Honorable Margaret Thatcher was nicknamed the "Iron Lady" by a Soviet journalist, which became an enduring reference to uncompromising leadership style; and
 
WHEREAS, Born in Grantham, Lincolnshire where her father was an Alderman and Mayor, the Right Honorable Margaret Thatcher was a research chemist before becoming a barrister; and
 
WHEREAS, The Right Honorable Margaret Thatcher was elected as a member of Parliament for Finchley in 1959 and was appointed Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1970 by Prime Minister Edward Heath; and
 
WHEREAS, In 1975 the Right Honorable Margaret Thatcher became the first woman to lead a major political party in the United Kingdom; and
 
WHEREAS, As Prime Minister, the Right Honorable Margaret Thatcher was a strong ally of the United States and moved to spur economic growth in Britain by implementing policies which emphasized deregulation and the privatization of state-owned companies; and
 
WHEREAS, The Right Honorable Margaret Thatcher resigned as Prime Minister in 1990 and was given a life peerage as Baroness Thatcher which entitled her to sit in the House of Lords; and
 
 
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Right Honorable Margaret Thatcher serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, the Right Honorable Margaret Thatcher imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of April, 2013, do hereby commemorate the Right Honorable Margaret Thatcher for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Right Honorable Margaret Thatcher.
