RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas E. Murphy has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 80; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A longtime resident of the North Shore, Dr. Thomas E. Murphy was a widely admired member of the medical profession and the loving husband for 49 years of Jane; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas E. Murphy was the much-adored father of Timothy, Annie, Kathleen and Erin and the grandfather of eight to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas E. Murphy was the dear brother of Michael, Edward, Dennis and Rosemary; and
WHEREAS, Raised in Dixon, Illinois, Dr. Thomas E. Murphy was the son of a surgeon and the grandson of a pharmacist; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas E. Murphy earned his undergraduate and medical degrees from Northwestern University; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas E. Murphy completed his residency at Cook County Hospital and a fellowship in oncology from Memorial Hospital in New York; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas E. Murphy served as an Army surgeon during the Vietnam War where he treated troops injured by gunfire and exposed to Agent Orange; and
WHEREAS, In 1970 Dr. Thomas E. Murphy joined St. Francis Hospital in Evanston where he distinguished himself as one of the Midwest's most prominent heart surgeons; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas E. Murphy also served on the medical staffs of Northwest Community Hospital, Resurrection Hospital and Lutheran General Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas E. Murphy retired in 2004 as Chief of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery for St. Francis Hospital; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Dr. Thomas E. Murphy serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Dr. Thomas E. Murphy to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Thomas E. Murphy will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Dr. Thomas E. Murphy imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of December, 2014, do hereby commemorate Dr. Thomas E. Murphy for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Dr. Thomas E. Murphy.
