RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, William Darrell Garth Sr. has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 78; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, William Darrell Garth Sr. served for more than 30 years as the Chief Executive and Publisher of the Citizen newspaper chain which covers African-American communities throughout Chicago and the suburbs; and

 

WHEREAS, William Darrell Garth Sr. was the much-adored father of Garth Jr. and the late Quentis, the grandfather of three and the great-grandfather of seven to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

 

WHEREAS, William Darrell Garth Sr. was active in numerous organizations, including the Illinois Press Association, the National Newspapers Publishers Association and the Midwest Black Publishers Association; and

 

WHEREAS, A widely admired philanthropist and civic leader, William Darrell Garth Sr. mentored young people of color to use their talents for the benefit of their neighborhoods; and

 

WHEREAS, William Darrell Garth Sr. played a major role in revitalizing Chatham by bringing Target and other chain stores to the area; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of William Darrell Garth Sr. serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared William Darrell Garth Sr. to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

WHEREAS, William Darrell Garth Sr. was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, William Darrell Garth Sr. imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifth day of October, 2016, do hereby commemorate for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of William Darrell Garth Sr.
