RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Theodore Sorensen, the writer who helped shape the mystique which surrounded President John Fitzgerald Kennedy, has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of eighty-two; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Beginning in 1960, the poignant words of Theodore Sorensen combined with the speaking prowess of President Kennedy to create a new standard for modern oratory; and
WHEREAS, The rhetoric crafted by Theodore Sorensen addressed such landmark events as the Cold War, the civil rights movement, and the war in Vietnam; and
WHEREAS, Among his most impressive achievements was Theodore Sorensen's contribution to President Kennedy's inaugural address which instilled in Americans a renewed sense of national pride while urging them toward an era of selflessness; and
WHEREAS, Theodore Sorensen regarded as his proudest moment his drafting of a letter during the Cuban missile crisis of 1962 to the Soviet Union's Nikita Khrushchev which was credited with resolving the conflict; and
WHEREAS, Theodore Sorensen fueled President Kennedy's desire to explore new frontiers by encouraging him to set goals for America's burgeoning space program and "landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth"; and
WHEREAS, Born in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1928, Theodore Chaikin Sorensen earned a law degree from the University of Nebraska before venturing to Washington D.C. at the age of twenty-four and accepting a position with then newly-elected Massachusetts Senator John F. Kennedy; and
WHEREAS, Following his years with the Kennedy administration, Theodore Sorensen worked as an international lawyer and was the author of four books which explored the Kennedy White House; and
WHEREAS, To his wife, Gillian, his daughter, Juliet, his sons, Eric, Stephen and Philip, and his seven grandchildren, Theodore Sorensen imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of November, 2010, do hereby commemorate Theodore Sorensen for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be
