RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Gus Savage has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Gus Savage was a former United States Congressman and the loving husband for more than 30 years of Eunice, nee King; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Gus Savage was the much-adored father of Thomas and Emma Mae and the grandfather of three to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, A native of Detroit, Michigan, the Honorable Gus Savage was raised on the South Side of Chicago and served in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Gus Savage worked as a journalist and founded the Westside Booster and Lawndale Booster newspapers and a chain called the Citizens Community Newspapers; and
WHEREAS, A widely respected leader of the Independent Black Caucus, the Honorable Gus Savage championed the candidacy of the late Harold Washington who became Chicago's first African-American mayor; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Gus Savage ably served as a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1981 to 1993; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his life, the Honorable Gus Savage passionately fought to protect and advance the civil rights of people of color; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Gus Savage serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable Gus Savage to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Gus Savage was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Gus Savage imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eighteenth day of November, 2015 do hereby commemorate the Honorable Gus Savage for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
