RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, Victor Gotbaum has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 93; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, A resident of Manhattan, New York, Victor Gotbaum was a widely admired labor leader and the loving husband of Betsy; and
 
WHEREAS, A native of Brooklyn, Victor Gotbaum served his country during World War II and earned a master's degree in international affairs from Columbia University; and
 
WHEREAS, Victor Gotbaum was employed by the U.S. Department of Labor and early in his union career worked as an Assistant Director of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and AFSME in Chicago; and
 
WHEREAS, Victor Gotbaum led the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees' District Council 37 in New York City from 1965 to 1987; and
 
WHEREAS, During his tenure, Victor Gotbaum organized thousands of municipal hospital employees and played an instrumental role in creating New York City's Office of Collective Bargaining; and
 
WHEREAS, Through his cooperative efforts, Victor Gotbaum helped New York City avert a financial crisis during the 1970s; and
 
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Victor Gotbaum serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Victor Gotbaum to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
 
WHEREAS, Victor Gotbaum was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
 
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Victor Gotbaum imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifteenth day of April, 2015, do hereby commemorate Victor Gotbaum for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
