RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Sergeant Douglas J. Riney has gone to his eternal reward at the age of 26; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Douglas J. Riney was a decorated member of the United States Army who lost his life in the global war against terrorism while serving his country in Afghanistan; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Fairview, Illinois, Sergeant Douglas J. Riney was a graduate of Spoon River Valley High School and a proud volunteer firefighter with the Fairview Fire Department; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Douglas J. Riney entered active service in July of 2012 as a petroleum supply specialist and was assigned to the Support Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division based out of Fort Hood, Texas; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Douglas J. Riney was deployed in June of 2016 in support of Operation Freedom's Sentinel and was fatally wounded after encountering hostile enemy forces in Kabul; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Douglas J. Riney was earlier deployed from July 2014 to February 2015 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Douglas J. Riney was the recipient of the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, the Army Commendation Medal, four Army Achievement Medals, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with three campaign stars, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon and the NATO Medal; and
WHEREAS, The courage, sacrifice and dedication of Sergeant Douglas J. Riney serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Sergeant Douglas J. Riney was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his loving wife, Kylie, his two children, Elea and James, and all the members of his family, Sergeant Douglas J. Riney imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this first day of November, 2016, do hereby commemorate Sergeant Douglas J. Riney for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Sergeant-Douglas J. Riney.
