RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Naomi Johnson has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 91; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Naomi Johnson was a longtime Chicago educator and the loving wife of Robert E. Johnson, the Executive Editor and Associate Publisher of Jet Magazine; and

 

WHEREAS, Naomi Johnson was the much-adored mother of Robert E. Johnson III, Bobbye and the late Janet to whom she imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that she possessed in abundance; and

 

WHEREAS, The first member of her family to attend college, Naomi Johnson spent 30 years as an educator and worked at Howalton Day School, the City's first private African-American school; and

 

WHEREAS, Naomi Johnson enjoyed a rich home life with her husband filled with visits from celebrities, including Motown founder Barry Gordy, singer James Brown, band leader Duke Ellington and boxer Mike Tyson; and

 

WHEREAS, A person of great literary knowledge, Naomi Johnson enjoyed reading books by Gwendolyn Brooks, Ralph Ellison, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston and Claude McKay; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Naomi Johnson serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, Her love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Naomi Johnson to her family members, friends and all who knew her, and enabled her to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

WHEREAS, A resident of the Hyde Park community, Naomi Johnson will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and neighbors; and

 

 

WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Naomi Johnson imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twentieth day of September, 2018, do hereby commemorate Naomi Johnson for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Naa/hi Johnson.
