WHEREAS, The Honorable Richard Posner, a widely admired member of the judicial community, retired from the bench on September 2, 2017; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Richard Posner served on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals based in Chicago and as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Chicago Law School; and

WHEREAS, A native of New York City, the Honorable Richard Posner graduated summa cum laude from Yale University and Harvard Law School where he was the valedictorian of his class and President of the Harvard Law Review; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Richard Posner clerked for United States Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan and was Assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Richard Posner accepted a position with Stanford Law School before moving to the faculty of the University of Chicago Law School; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Richard Posner was appointed by President Ronald Reagan to the 7th Circuit in 1981 and served as Chief Judge of that court from 1993 to 2000; and

WHEREAS, During his tenure on the bench, the Honorable Richard Posner authored more than 3,300 opinions and earned a reputation as "one of the world's leading intellectuals"; and

WHEREAS, The Honorable Richard Posner is the author of many books and articles covering a wide range of topics from law to economics and literature; and

WHEREAS, In his retirement the Honorable Richard Posner plans to concentrate on teaching and publishing with a focus on social justice reform; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Richard Posner serve as an example to all; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixth day of September, 2017, do hereby express our gratitude to the Honorable Richard Posner on his exemplary career in public service and do hereby express our best wishes for his continued good health and happiness; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the Honorable Richard Posner.
