WHEREAS, Linda Yu, esteemed, award-winning news anchor at WLS-Channel 7 for the past thirty-two years, retired on November 23, 2016, after thirty-seven years in Chicago television; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her retirement by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, Linda Yu is a trailblazer and important role model who opened up windows of opportunity to others in her profession as the first Asian-American to anchor and report news in Chicago; and

WHEREAS, Born in Xian, China, Linda Yu graduated from the University of California; and

WHEREAS, Linda Yu relocated to Chicago in 1979 to accept a position in broadcast journalism as weekend anchor on WMAQ-Channel 5, later moving over to the 10:00 p.m. weeknight newscast; and

WHEREAS, After spending five years at WMAQ-Channel 5, Lind Yu moved to WLS-Channel 7 where she led the 4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday newscast to the number one ratings slot for the next thirty-two years; and

WHEREAS, Beginning in 1992 and continuing through 2013, Linda Yu co-anchored a morning newscast alongside Sylvia Perez; and

WHEREAS, Linda Yu and Sylvia Perez became the first women in the Chicagoland television market to co-anchor a newscast; and

WHEREAS, Linda Yu, a highly respected and greatly admired broadcast journalist is the recipient of five Chicago Emmy Awards; and

WHEREAS, Linda Yu was inducted into the Silver Circle of the Chicago/Midwest chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in 2005; and

WHEREAS, Linda Yu has published in book form a memoir titled "Living and Working in America; 15 Lessons," in order to assist young Chinese women in the workplace; and

WHEREAS, Linda Yu leaves behind a remarkable legacy in Chicago journalism for her inspired reporting and connectivity with Chicagoland viewers; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council assembled this fourteenth day of December, 2016, do hereby thank Linda Yu for her many contributions to Chicago and congratulate her on her retirement from the news profession and wish her the very best as he begins the next phase of her life; and

 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Linda Yu.
