WHEREAS, God in His Infinite Wisdom has called Earl Victor Boyd, most beloved citizen, to his eternal reward on January 31st, 2019, at the age of eighty-four; and
WHEREAS, this august body has been informed of his passing by the Honorable Derrick Curtis, Alderman of the 18th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Earl was born into this world on April 16, 1934 on the south side of Chicago to the union of Daniel and Lucille Boyd; and
WHEREAS, Earl attended Doolittle Elementary School and graduated from DuSable High School. He served in the United States Army, and there he met the love of his life, Shirley Boyd, who preceded him in death. It was from their union that two children were born, Vanessa, who preceded him in death, and Kevin; and
WHEREAS, after serving in the military, Earl worked at the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). He retired from the CTA after twenty-seven years of dedicated service; and
WHEREAS, Earl cared a great deal about his community and contributed much of his time to ensure it had the best quality of life for the people who lived there. He served in multiple ways, including: as a member ofthe 18th Ward Safety Committee; Court Advocate and Co-Facilitator for Beat 834 meetings, both part of the Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy (CAPS) Program; and as the former chair of the Ashburn Community Project, another effort to support a safe and thriving neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, in addition to his family and community, Earl had a great love of music across several genres. He learned how to master the drums and was extremely passionate about classical jazz. He took his musical skills to the level of doing professional engagements, including with some notable jazz musicians; and
WHEREAS, Earl was a man of deep faith. He was devout Catholic and a long-standing member of St. Margaret of Scotland Catholic Church in Chicago, a place where he was well known for his warm demeanor, generous spirit, big smile, and frequent acts of kindness and caring; and
WHEREAS, Earl leaves to cherish his legacy and life with fond memories: his son, Kevin; sister, Esther "Main" Wright; grandchildren, Loreal Boyd, Kevin Boyd, Jr., and Kayla Boyd; and a host of relatives, friends, and extended family; now therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, that we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled this thirteenth day of March, 2019, do hereby extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Earl Victor Boyd; and
