MEMORIAL RESOLUTION FOR MYLINDA CANE
WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that the members of this chamber learned of the death of Mylinda Cane on September 29, 2018, at the age of fifty-six; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by the Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and
WHEREAS, Mylinda Marie was born on December 8,1961, to loving parents Robert and the late Reva Mae; and
WHEREAS, Mylinda was a longtime advocate for cancer research and patients, and developed cancer awareness programs serving Northwest Indiana through the Munster-based Community Healthcare System beginning in the 1990's; and
WHEREAS, Mylinda passed away at the age of 56, in her Schererville home after enduring a four-year battle with metastatic breast cancer. She will be remembered as an innovator, a mentor, a marketing expert and an award winning journalist; and
WHEREAS, Mylinda was a native of Adrian, Michigan. Cane graduated from Michigan State University and moved to Northwest Indiana in 1984 to take a position as business reporter for The Times, covering the Calumet Region's major industries. The following year she was promoted to business editor and won awards as a leader in online newspaper design; and
WHEREAS, In 1991, Community Hospital recruited Cane to develop the hospital's first community relations and marketing department. As that organization grew into Community Healthcare System with three hospitals, she served as the regional chief marketing director; and
WHEREAS, Mylinda Cane was a valued member of the executive team at the Community Healthcare System which includes Community Hospital, St. Catherine Hospital and St. Mary Medical Center; and
WHEREAS, Cane's cancer advocacy work included development ofthe annual "Lights of Life" program in 1998. Each December, trees outside Community Hospital in Munster glow with lavender and pink lights to honor those touched by cancer. The pink trees represent those with breast cancer and the lavender trees symbolize all types of cancer. To date, the Lights of Life program has raised nearly $200,000 to support local cancer research efforts; and
WHEREAS, Cane was very active in the community, and managed the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster. She also served as a founding board member of both the Community Cancer Research Foundation and the Task Force for Community Cancer Resource Center; and
WHEREAS, Cane also participated in many programs that benefit children. Her committee work with the Munster Education Foundation advanced opportunities for gifted and talented students. As president and board member for the Dunes Learning Center, she helped guide children to establish a relationship with nature; and
WHEREAS, Mylinda Marie Cane leaves to cherish her memory, her adoring husband, Michael Cane; treasured children, Kristen (Grant) Duncan of Valparaiso, Indiana, Kevin Cane of Chicago, Illinois and Marionna Cane of Columbia, South Carolina; sisters, Manette DeCremer of Crystal Lake, Illinois and Michelle (Chris) Mutert of Arvada, Colorado; brother Mark (Jackie) Perry of Dimondale, Michigan; and her devoted father, Robert Perry of Finlay, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her loving mother, Reva Mae Heckert; and
WHEREAS, Mylinda touched the lives of all who knew her through her kindness, generosity and vivacious spirit. She will be deeply missed, but the memory of her character, intelligence and unwavering compassion will live on in those who knew and loved her; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the member of the City Council ofthe City of Chicago, assembled here this twelfth day of December, 2018, do hereby extend our most heartfelt condolences to the family of Mylinda Marie Cane.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That suitable copies ofthis resolution be prepared and presented to the family of Mylinda Marie Cane as a sign of our honor, gratitude, and respect.
