RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, R. Eden Martin, civic leader and longtime Chicago attorney, has been named a recipient of the 2017 Order of Lincoln Award by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this honor by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, The Order of Lincoln is the state of Illinois' highest award given to individuals whose achievements and contributions to the betterment of society have brought honor to the state; and

 

WHEREAS, R. Eden Martin was born in Sullivan, Illinois and is an alumnus of the University of Illinois and Harvard University; and

 

WHEREAS, R. Eden Martin has nearly 50 years of experience practicing law at both the federal and state levels; and

 

 

WHEREAS, R. Eden Martin served as a partner at the law firm Sidley Austin LLP for almost 30 years, and continues to serve as Of-Counsel with a strong focus on regulatory litigation and appellate cases in the Energy Practice Group; and

 

 

WHEREAS, R. Eden Martin is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation; and

 

WHEREAS, R. Eden Martin is the former President of the Civic Committee of The Commercial Club of Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, R. Eden Martin serves on the Boards of Directors at Nicor Gas and Northern Illinois Gas Company; and

 

WHEREAS, R. Eden Martin served on the Board of Directors of the Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) Holdings, Inc. 2010-2017; and

 

WHEREAS, R. Eden Martin was Chairman of the Chicago Historical Society and the Ravinia Festival Association; and

 

WHEREAS, R. Eden Martin was also a Director of Aon Corporation and the Aon Foundation; and

 

WHEREAS, R. Eden Martin has been a Life Trustee of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Northwestern University, the Chicago Historical Society, and the Ravinia Festival Association; and

 

 

WHEREAS, R. Eden Martin serves as a Life Director of the University of Illinois Foundation; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council do hereby recognize and congratulate R. Eden Martin on this nineteenth day of April, 2017, as one of seven distinguished recipients of the Order of Lincoln Award which is to be presented by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois on May 6, 2017; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be presented to R. Eden

Martin.
