RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Ira Weinstein has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 96; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Glencoe, Ira Weinstein was a decorated World War II airman and the loving husband of Marilyn and the late Norma; and
WHEREAS, Ira Weinstein was the much-adored father of Terri and Laura and the grandfather of two to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Ira Weinstein owned the Schram Advertising company for more than forty years until it was sold in 1990 and became Temkin & Temkin; and
WHEREAS, A native of Chicago, Ira Weinstein bravely served his country during World War II as a United States Army Air Force bombardier and navigator assigned to the 445th Bomb Group; and
WHEREAS, Ira Weinstein participated in a bombing raid on September 27, 1944 that targeted Kassel, Germany, an industrial center that manufactured tanks, assembled trains and made guns; and
WHEREAS, During the ill-fated Kassel Mission, nearly all of the B-25 Liberators sent on the mission were shot down as they were attacked from behind by an estimated 150 German fighter planes; and
WHEREAS, The raid resulted in the most tragic one-day loss to any American bomb group during World War II; and
WHEREAS, Ira Weinstein's plane was among those shot down and he spent the rest of the war as a prisoner; and
WHEREAS, Ira Weinstein was eventually liberated by advancing Russian troops and was awarded a Purple Heart and the French Croix de Guerre; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Ira Weinstein serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, A member of our "Greatest Generation," Ira Weinstein will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Ira Weinstein imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixteenth day of March, 2016, do hereby commemorate Ira Weinstein for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
