RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Lowell Thomas Jr. has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 92; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Lowell Thomas Jr. was a former Lieutenant Governor of the State of Alaska and the loving husband of the late Mary known as "Tay"; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Lowell Thomas Jr. was the much-adored father of Anne and David to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

 

WHEREAS, The son of Lowell and Frances Thomas, the Honorable Lowell Thomas Jr. was born in London, England; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Lowell Thomas Jr. was raised in New York City where his father was one of the nation's best-known radio broadcasters; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Lowell Thomas Jr. moved to Alaska in 1960 where he pursued a career in public service and was well known for his work as an Arctic researcher; and

 

WHEREAS, An adventurer and author, the Honorable Lowell Thomas Jr. flew around much of the world with his wife in a Cessna 180 and documented the trips in articles and a book; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Lowell Thomas Jr. served as a member of the State Senate before serving as Lieutenant Governor from 1974 to 1978 under Governor Jay Hammond; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Lowell Thomas Jr. was a leader dedicated to conservation and protecting wildlife and natural habitats; and

 

WHEREAS, After leaving public office, the Honorable Lowell Thomas Jr. owned and operated an air taxi business and transported climbers onto Denali, the tallest peak in North America; and

 

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Lowell Thomas Jr. serve as an example to all; and

 

 

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable Lowell Thomas Jr. to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Lowell Thomas Jr. was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Lowell Thomas Jr. imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this first day of November, 2016, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Lowell Thomas for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Ltybnorable Lowell Thomas Jr.
