RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Katherine "Kit" Duffy has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 71; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A resident of the Logan Square community, Katherine "Kit" Duffy was a widely admired activist who served as the City's first liaison to the gay community under Mayor Harold Washington; and
WHEREAS, A native of Hagerstown, Maryland, Katherine "Kit" Duffy came to the Chicago area to attend Northwestern University; and
WHEREAS, Katherine "Kit" Duffy was named to the city post soon after Mayor Washington was elected in 1983; and
WHEREAS, Although Katherine "Kit" Duffy was straight, she was adept at putting different groups together; and
WHEREAS, A fixture in Democratic progressive circles, Katherine "Kit" Duffy was the first Executive Director of the AIDS Foundation of Chicago and helped found Equality Illinois; and
WHEREAS, After concluding her tenure at City Hall, Katherine "Kit" Duffy helped secure passage in 1988 of Chicago's landmark Human Rights Ordinance which bars discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation; and
WHEREAS, Katherine "Kit" Duffy inspired the lives of countless people with her focus, organization and concern; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Katherine "Kit" Duffy serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Katherine "Kit" Duffy was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Katherine "Kit" Duffy imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of January, 2016, do hereby commemorate Katherine "Kit" Duffy for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Katherine "Kit" Duffy.
