RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, Jeremiah Denton has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 89; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Jeremiah Denton was a former United States Senator from Alabama and the loving husband of Jane; and
 
WHEREAS, A native of Mobile, the Honorable Jeremiah Denton graduated from the United States Naval Academy and heroically served his country during the Vietnam War; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Jeremiah Denton was a pilot in the United States Navy who was shot down over North Vietnam and spent nearly seven years as a prisoner of war in the infamous "Hanoi Hilton"; and
 
WHEREAS, During his captivity, the Honorable Jeremiah Denton was forced to appear in a propaganda film but clerly blinked out the covert message T-O-R-T-U-R-E in Morris Code; and
 
WHEREAS, Jeremiah Denton wrote of his harsh treatment and confinement at the hands of the North Vietnamese in the book entitled "When Hell Was in Session"; and
 
WHEREAS, A recipient of the Navy Cross and other medals, the Honorable Jeremiah Denton retired from the Navy as a Rear Admiral and later embarked on a career in politics; and
 
WHEREAS, Jeremiah Denton served as the first Republican Senator since the Reconstruction Era from Alabama and carved out a reputation as an champion of maintaining a strong military capability and supported traditional values; and
 
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Jeremiah Denton serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable Jeremiah Denton will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
 
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Jeremiah Denton imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this second day of April, 2014, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Jeremiah Denton for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Jeremiah Denton.
