RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable James E. Holshouser, Jr. has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 78; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable James E. Holshouser, Jr. was the loving and devoted husband of the late Patricia; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable James E. Holshouser, Jr. was the beloved father of Ginny to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
 
WHEREAS, With his hard work, determination and finely honed political instincts, the Honorable James E. Holshouser, Jr. played an instrumental role in leading the North Carolina Republican Party back to power and popularity; and
 
WHEREAS, After serving several terms in the General Assembly, the Honorable James E. Holshouser, Jr. won a close election in 1972 to become the youngest governor in the history of North Carolina as well as the first Republican one in more than seven decades; and
 
WHEREAS, During his four years as Governor, the Honorable James E. Holshouser, Jr. did important work toward establishing rural health clinics, laying the groundwork for updated criminal justice information systems and reorganizing state government; and
 
WHEREAS, The Honorable James E. Holshouser, Jr. advanced the cause of equality by appointing African-Americans and women to important posts in state government; and
 
WHEREAS, A man of great integrity and moral conviction, the Honorable James E. Holshouser, Jr. remained involved in many worthy religious and civic causes after retiring from political service; and
 
 
WHEREAS, The perseverance, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable James E. Holshouser, Jr. serve as an example to all; and
 
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable James E. Holshouser, Jr. to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
 
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable James E. Holshouser, Jr. imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-sixth day of June, 2013, do hereby commemorate the Honorable James E. Holshouser, Jr. for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable James E. Holshouser, Jr.
