RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Michael D. Healy has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 91; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Michael D. Healy was a retired Major General in the United States Army and the loving husband of Jacklyn; and
WHEREAS, Michael D. Healy was the much-adored father of Daniel, Michael Jr., Timothy, Sean, Kirk and Patrick, the grandfather of nine and the great-grandfather of eleven to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, A legendary leader of the Special Forces known as the Green Berets, Michael D. Healy was raised in Chicago and graduated from Fen wick High School in Oak Park; and
WHEREAS, The son of a police officer, Michael D. Healy joined the United States Army at the close of World War II and participated in the occupation of Japan; and
WHEREAS, Michael D. Healy fought in the Korean War and bravely served his country for more than five tours of duty in the Vietnam War during which he commanded several battalions; and
WHEREAS, Known by his comrades as "Iron Mike," Michael D. Healy was twice awarded the Purple Heart, three Distinguished Service Medals, two Silver Stars, seven Bronze Stars with Valor and numerous other medals; and
WHEREAS, In 1981 Michael D. Healy retired after a 35-year career in the armed forces and was honored by being named the Grand Marshal of Chicago's 26th annual St. Patrick's Day Parade; and
WHEREAS, Michael D. Healy's reputation earned him a mention in several books and he was the inspiration for John Wayne's character in the movie "The Green Berets"; and
WHEREAS, The courage, sacrifice and dedication of Michael Healy serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Michael D. Healy to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, Michael D. Healy was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Michael D. Healy imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-third day of May, 2018, do hereby commemorate Michael D. Healy for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
