RESOLUTION

 

WHEREAS, John F. ("Jack") Sandner has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 79; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Jack is survived by his wife, Carole (Erhardt) Sandner and their eight children, Kathleen M. Sandner-Gialamas, Christopher J. Sandner, Angela M. Sandner-Stensrud, Michael A. Sandner, Nicholas J. Sandner, Allysann E. Sandner, Kevin M. Sandner, Annamarie E. Sandner, and several grandchildren; and

 

WHEREAS, Jack was born in South Side, Chicago on November 3,1941; and

 

WHEREAS, He attended Chicago Vocational High School, eventually graduating from Leo Catholic High School as valedictorian;

 

WHEREAS, Jack was awarded a scholarship to study psychology at Southern Illinois University earning a Bachelor of Arts; and

 

WHEREAS, He went on to obtain a Juris Doctorate from the University of Notre Dame, where he received the law school's Dean's Award and won the three-year Appellate Advocacy competition; and

 

WHEREAS, Jack earned a fellowship to the Law Science Academy, where he won the Dr. Ruth Jackson Award, graduating with high honors; and

 

WHEREAS, Jack was called to the Illinois Bar in 1968 and was subsequently admitted to several courts, including the United States Supreme Court; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1971, Jack borrowed $80,000 to purchase a seat on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME); and

 

WHEREAS, By 1977, Jack established his own trading firm, and was elected to the board of the CME; and .

 

WHEREAS, He went on to become its chairman in 1980, becoming the youngest ever elected to the position and the first to serve multiple terms throughout the 1980s and 1990s; and

 

WHEREAS, Jack testified frequently before Congress as an industry leader, most notably the 1980 Gold and Silver Crisis, the 1987 stock market crash, and in the 1990s the modernization of financial services regulation; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Jack was appointed to various boards and commissions, such as the U.S. Advisory Commission on Financial Services, the U.S. Chair for Financial Services at the Trans-Atlantic Business Dialogue, the President's Export Council, the premier National Advisory Council, the Library of Congress National Digital Strategy Advisory Board, and boards of Ryan Specialty Group.and Virtu Financial LLC; and

 

WHEREAS, For 22 years, Jack served as Chairman and CEO of RB&H Financial Services, and then became Chairman of E-Trade Futures, LLC; and

 

WHEREAS, His philanthropic work included the Boards of Notre Dame, Rush University Medical Center, Museum of Science and Industry, John G. Shedd Aquarium, the National Futures Association, the Civic Committee of the Commercial Club of Chicago and member of the Economic and Executive Clubs of Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS; Jack championed causes earning him the Points of Light Award from President George H. W. Bush, the Horatio Alger Award, the "Living Proof Award" from Rush University Neurobehayjoral Center, Man of the Year by Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, the American Ireland Fund, the Italian-American Sports Hall of Fame, the Brazilian-American Chamber of Commerce as U.S. Person of the Year, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Outstanding Award, the Entrepreneurial Champion Award, and the Illinois Institute of Technology, Tech-X Award; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, John F. Sandner imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-first day of April, 2021, do hereby commemorate John F. Sandner for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of John F. Sandner.
