RESOLUTION
 
 
WHEREAS, Major League Baseball executive and former manager Tony La Russa, Jr., was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 27, 2014, in Cooperstown, New York; and
 
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
 
WHEREAS, Tony La Russa, Jr., began his professional baseball career in 1963 and spent parts of five Major League seasons as a player with the Kansas City/Oakland Athletics, the Atlanta Braves and the Chicago Cubs; and
 
WHEREAS, Tony La Russa, Jr., went on to win recognition for his roles as a manager of the Chicago White Sox, the Oakland Athletics and the St. Louis Cardinals; and
 
WHEREAS, Tony La Russa, Jr., earned 2,728 victories as a manager and ranks third in all of Major League history behind baseball legends Connie Mack and John McGraw; and
 
WHEREAS, Tony La Russa, Jr., was named Manager of the Chicago White Sox in the middle of the 1979 season and guided the team to an American League West division title four years later; and
 
WHEREAS, As the Manager of the Oakland Athletics, Tony La Russa, Jr., led the team to three consecutive championships from 1988 to 1990 and to the 1989 World Series title; and
 
WHEREAS, Tony La Russa, Jr., became the manager of the Cardinals in 1996 and led the team to three National League championships and the 2006 and 2011 World Series titles; and
 
WHEREAS, Tony La Russa, Jr., retired in 2011 after 33 seasons as a Major League manager and accepted a position assisting the executive vice president of Major League Baseball Operations; and
 
 
WHEREAS, In 2014 Tony La Russa, Jr., became Chief Baseball Officer for the Arizona Diamondbacks; and
 
WHEREAS, The hard work, talent and dedication of Tony La Russa, Jr., serve as an example to all; now, therefore
 
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirtieth day of July, 2014, do hereby congratulate Tony La Russa, Jr., on his induction as a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and do hereby declare that July 31, 2014, shall be officially recognized as Tony La Russa, Jr., Day throughout the City of Chicago; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Tony La Russa, Jr.
