RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 83; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., was a retired five-term Congressman and the loving husband of the late Charlene, nee Jurgensen; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., was the much-adored father of Morgan III, Michelle and Constance and the "Papa" of five to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., was the dear brother of Mary, Jane and Bernard and the late Reverend John and Sister Carol Ann, R.S.M.; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., proudly served his country as a 1st Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps from 1955 to 1957; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., graduated from Northwestern University and DePaul University College of Law; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1970 to 1980; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure on Capitol Hill, the Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., fought to revive Midway Airport, bring federal funding to the Port of Chicago and spur shipping across the Great Lakes; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., championed efforts to combat illegal drugs and was one the first members of Congress to call for gun control; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., was a member of the House Rules Committee, the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the Select Committee on Narcotics and Drug Abuse Control, the Foreign Affairs Committee and Chairman of the Subcommittee on Legislation; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., was presented with the Central Intelligence Agency Award from Director Admiral Stansfield Turner in recognition of his leadership and legislation work on behalf of the intelligence community; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., was an active attorney in Illinois and a Partner in Murphy & Boyle; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., served as a member of the Chicago Public Library Board and as Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mercy Hospital and Medical Center; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., was a highly distinguished Chicagoan whose hard work and dedication serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and bigger-than-life personality; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixteenth day of March, 2016, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Morgan Murphy, Jr., for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
