RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable George Deukmejian has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 89; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable George Deukmejian was the 35th Governor of the State of California and the loving husband of Gloria; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable George Deukmejian was the much-adored father of three and the grandfather of six to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

 

WHEREAS, The son of Armenian immigrants, the Honorable George Deukmejian graduated from Siena College and St. John's University Law School; and

 

WHEREAS, Known as the "Iron Duke," the Honorable George Deukmejian served from 1983 to 1991 and during his two terms as Governor ran a law-and-order administration; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable George Deukmejian expanded the state's prison system, supported tough anti-crime legislation and earned a reputation as a fiscal conservative; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable George Deukmejian supported efforts to divest California's pension funds and university system from companies doing business with South Africa during apartheid; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable George Deukmejian serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable George Deukmejian to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable George Deukmejian was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable George Deukmejian imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-third day of May, 2018, do hereby commemorate the Honorable George Deukmejian for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable George Deukmejian.
