Resolution Congratulating Thomas J. Hoberg on Retirement
WHEREAS, on the 29th day of April, 2014, Northeastern Illinois University celebrated the career and retirement of Professor Thomas J. Hoberg; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward, has apprised this august body of this occasion; and
WHEREAS, beginning his career in 1966, Professor Hoberg has held a teaching position at Northeastern Illinois University for almost five decades, teaching through an ever changing and evolving world; and
WHEREAS, Professor Hoberg has taught and enlightened thousands of students in during his career, developing in his students an appreciation for folklore, classical literature, and poetry; and
WHEREAS, known as a scholar and esteemed professor of English, Professor Hoberg was also known by his students as an approachable, friendly advisor, willing to lend advice on many different matters, and known for his "open door policy"; and
WHEREAS, Northeastern Illinois University is the most diverse university in the Midwest, including many non-traditional students and students of many varied backgrounds. Professor Hoberg will be remembered among the faculty as having a keen ability to connect personally with his students: eager to learn about their personal journey to higher education and their unique backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, by sharing his passion for folklore, the informal record of diverse and changing cultures, Thomas Hoberg helped prepare his students to deal with the tumultuous changes that would mark their lives: the ongoing challenge to racial segregation, the evolving role of women in contemporary society, the end of the Cold War, expanded immigration, and instantaneous communication; and
WHEREAS, although he will be missed by the students and faculty of the English Department at
Northeastern Illinois University, his colleagues wish for him a happy retirement of relaxation,
travel, and continued learning; now therefore, ift ~ '
