RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Ethel Skyles Alexander has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, A native of Chicago, the Honorable Ethel Skyles Alexander worked for 33 years for the Cook County Circuit Court's Records Department and became the first woman appointed as Assistant Chief Deputy Clerk for the Criminal Division of the Circuit Court; and

 

WHEREAS, The daughter of the late state legislator Charles Skyles, the Honorable Ethel Skyles Alexander was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1978; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Ethel Skyles Alexander served in the Illinois House until her appointment in 1986 to the Illinois State Senate; and

 

WHEREAS, During her esteemed tenure in Springfield, the Honorable Ethel Skyles Alexander championed the "Rape Shield Law" which protects rape victims from having their past brought up at trial; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Ethel Skyles Alexander also toughened child pornography laws and co-sponsored legislation that prohibited state agencies from doing business with aparatheid-era South Africa; and

 

WHEREAS, Following a long and distinguished career, the Honorable Ethel Skyles Alexander retired from public service in 1993; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Ethel Skyles Alexander was one of the founding members of the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Foundation; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Ethel Skyles Alexander serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Ethel Skyles Alexander was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To her beloved family, the Honorable Ethel Skyles Alexander imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifth day of October, 2016, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Ethel Skyles Alexander for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family ofthe Honorable Ethel Skyles Alexander.
