RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Margaretta "Happy" Rockefeller has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 88; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, A woman of dignity, grace and charm, Margaretta "Happy" Rockefeller was the loving wife of the late New York Governor and United States Vice President Nelson Rockefeller; and

 

WHEREAS, Born in Pennsylvania, Margaretta "Happy" Rockefeller was given her nickname as a child because of her pleasant disposition; and

 

WHEREAS, The mother of six, Margaretta "Happy" Rockefeller believed in the importance of family and the support and perspective that it provides to its members; and

 

WHEREAS, Margaretta "Happy" Rockefeller was the daughter of an heir to a cordage fortune and the great-great granddaughter of Civil War General George Gordon Meade, the Union commander at the Battle Gettysburg; and

 

WHEREAS, A widely admired philanthropist and civic leader, Margaretta "Happy" Rockefeller was a Past Chairman of the Board of the Saratoga Performing Arts Center; and

 

WHEREAS, Margaretta "Happy" Rockefeller generously supported cultural organizations, including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park in New York City and the Central Park Conservancy and Historic Hudson Valley; and

 

WHEREAS, Valued for her advice and wisdom, Margaretta "Happy" Rockefeller was appointed public delegate to the United Nations by President George H.W. Bush in 1991; and

 

WHEREAS, Margaretta "Happy" Rockefeller was among the first women to speak publically about her struggle with breast cancer during the 1970s; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Margaretta "Happy" Rockefeller serve as an example to all; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Margaretta "Happy" Rockefeller was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To her beloved family, Margaretta "Happy" Rockefeller imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this seventeenth day of June, 2015, do hereby commemorate Margaretta "Happy" Rockefeller for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Margaretta "Happy" Rockefeller.
