RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Lydia Cochrane has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 87; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, A native of New York City, Lydia Cochrane was the loving wife of the late Eric; and

 

WHEREAS, Born Lydia Goodwin Steinway, Lydia Cochrane was a descendant of the founder of the Steinway & Sons piano company and was raised in Manhattan; and

 

WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Lydia Cochrane followed her own path and was known for her intelligence; and

 

WHEREAS, After graduating from Smith College, Lydia Cochrane worked in the Book Reviews Section of the New York Herald Tribune; and

 

WHEREAS, Lydia Cochrane moved with her husband in 1957 to the Hyde Park community where she taught French at the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools; and

 

WHEREAS, Fluent in Italian as well as French, Lydia Cochrane later worked as a translator for the University of Chicago Press where she painstakingly translated hundreds of scholarly books and articles; and

 

WHEREAS, A woman of dignity, grace and charm, Lydia Cochrane was active in social and civic circles and was a member of the Fortnightly Club of Chicago and Tuesday Ladies; and

 

WHEREAS, Lydia Cochrane held numerous season subscriptions to cultural events throughout Chicago that she regularly attended; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Lydia Cochrane serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, Lydia Cochrane will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

 

WHEREAS, To her two sons, John and Nicholas, and her six adoring grandchildren, Lydia Cochrane imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this tenth day of February, 2016, do hereby commemorate Lydia Cochrane for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
