RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Michael A. Sheehan has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 63; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Michael A. Sheehan was a renowned counter-terrorism expert and the loving husband of Sita Graham Vasan; and

 

WHEREAS, Raised in Hazlet, New Jersey, Michael A. Sheehan graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1977 and entered the Special Forces; and

 

WHEREAS, Michael A. Sheehan graduated with a master's degree in 1988 from the Georgetown University School of Foreign Service and earned a second master's degree in 1992 from Army Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; and

 

WHEREAS, Michael A. Sheehan helped to investigate the loss of American lives in the "Black Hawk Down" incident in which two helicopters were shot down and 18 soldiers killed in Somalia; and

 

WHEREAS, More than a year before the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Michael A. Sheehan warned of the threat of Osama bin Laden and the dangers of al-Qaida; and

 

WHEREAS, From 2011 to 2013 Michael A. Sheehan served as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Special Operations where he directed all Special Operations branches, including the Army Rangers and Navy SEALs and drone strikes targeting terrorists overseas; and

 

WHEREAS, The courage, vision and dedication of Michael A. Sheehan serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, Michael A. Sheehan was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Michael A. Sheehan imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twentieth day of September, 2018, do hereby commemorate Michael A. Sheehan for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Michael A. Sheehan.
