RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Ryne D. ("Ryno") Sandberg will be honored by the Board of the Chicago Historical Society at its 27th Annual Making History Awards on June 2, 2021; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his achievement by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Ryno will be receiving the Almos Alonzo Stegg Sr. Making History Award for Distinction in Sports; and
WHEREAS, Over the past twenty-six years, the Making History Awards have honored 121 Chicagoans and 13 Chicago companies whose enduring contributions have made Chicago a better and vibrant place to live; and
WHEREAS, Ryno was born and raised in Spokane, Washington to his parents, Elizabeth and Derwent D. Sandberg; and
WHEREAS, He was a three-sport star in high school at North Central and graduated in 1978; and
WHEREAS, Ryno was recruited to play quarterback at NCAA Division I colleges, and eventually signed a letter of intent with Washington State University in Pullman but opted not to attend after being selected in the 20th round of the 1978 baseball amateur draft by the Philadelphia Phillies; and
WHEREAS, He made his major-league debut as a shortstop for the Phillies in 1981 playing in only 13 games, and was traded to the Chicago Cubs prior to the 1982 season; and
WHEREAS, During the 1982 season, the Cubs installed him as their third baseman and went on to be one of the top-rated rookies of the year; and
WHEREAS, After winning a Gold Glove Award in his first season as second baseman in 1983, Ryno emerged with a breakout season in 1984, in which he batted .314 with 200 hits, 114 runs, 36 doubles, 19 triples, 19 homers, and 84 RBIs; and
WHEREAS, Following his Hall of Fame induction in 2005, Ryno had his number 23 retired in a ceremony at Wrigley Field on August 28, 2005 before a Cubs game against the Florida Marlins; and
WHEREAS, On September 22,2013, Ryno was named the Phillies Manager, becoming the second Hall-of-Fame player to manager a team full-time; and
WHEREAS, In 2016, Ryno joined the Cubs organization as a goodwill ambassador making public appearances at Cub-related events, and attended Cubs games to meet and greet fans; and
WHEREAS,,Ryno and his wife, Margarct founded Ryno Kid Care which was dedicated to enhancing the lives of children with serious medical conditions and their families, by providing supportive, compassionate and meaningful programming; and
WHEREAS, In 2017, Ryno was inducted as a Laureate of The Lincoln Academy of Illinois and awarded the Order of Lincoln (the State's highest honor) by the Governor of Illinois; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-first day of April, 2021, do hereby congratulate Ryne D. Sandberg.on receiving tlie Almos Alonzo Stegg Sr. Making History Award and do hereby extend our best wishes to him; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to Ryne D. Sandberg.
