RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Ed Temple has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 89; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of Nashville, Tennessee, Ed Temple was a widely admired member of the sports community; and

WHEREAS, Ed Temple was the much adored father of Lloyd and Edwina to whom he imparted many ofthe fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Ed Temple began his women's track and field coaching career during a time when black female athletes were treated as second second-class citizens and pushed through the racial and gender barriers leading his team to victories; and

WHEREAS, Ed Temple enjoyed a long and highly successful career as the Tennessee State track and field coach whose Tigerbelles won 13 Olympic gold medals; and

WHEREAS, Ed Temple coached the women's track team at Tennessee State from 1953 to 1994 and then was head coach of the U.S. Olympics women's teams in 1960 and 1964 and assistant coach in 1980; and

WHEREAS, During his 41 years as coach, Ed Temple led his teams to more than 30 national titles and coached 40 athletes to the Olympics; and

WHEREAS, Ed Temple was inducted into nine halls of fame, including the Olympic Hall of Fame in 2012, where he was one of only four coaches to be inducted; and

WHEREAS, In addition to his many professional achievements, Ed Temple served as a member ofthe U.S. Olympic Committee and the International Women's Track and Field Committee; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Ed Temple serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Ed Temple to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

WHEREAS, Ed Temple was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Ed Temple imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fifth day of October, 2016, do hereby commemorate Ed Temple for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Ed Temple.
