RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Antonin Scalia has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Born in Trenton, New Jersey, the Honorable Antonin Scalia was the son of immigrant Italian parents who excelled in academics; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Antonin Scalia graduated from Georgetown University and Harvard Law School; and

 

WHEREAS, A devout Roman Catholic, the Honorable Antonin Scalia married the former Maureen McCarthy in 1960 and the couple were blessed with nine children; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Antonin Scalia was in private practice before becoming a law school professor at the University of Virginia and later at the University of Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, During the 1970s, the Honorable Antonin Scalia served in the administrations of President Richard M. Nixon and President Gerald R. Ford; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Antonin Scalia was a Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit from 1982 to 1986; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Antonin Scalia was nominated in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan to serve as a member of the United States Supreme Court and became its first Italian-American justice; and

 

WHEREAS, A champion of conservative ideology, the Honorable Antonin Scalia served with distinction as a member of the high court for nearly 30 years; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Antonin Scalia serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Antonin Scalia was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Antonin Scalia imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixteenth day of March, 2016, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Antonin Scalia for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Antonin Scalia.
