RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Nancy Reagan has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 94; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, A woman of dignity, grace and charm, Nancy Reagan was the loving and devoted wife of President Ronald Reagan; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Reagan attended high school in Chicago at the exclusive Latin School and graduated from Smith College in Massachusetts where she majored in English and drama; and
WHEREAS, During the 1940s, Nancy Reagan embarked on a career as an actress in Hollywood where she signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios and met her future husband, Ronald Reagan, then President of the Screen Actors Guild; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Reagan was First Lady of the State of California during her husband's two terms as Governor from 1967 to 1975; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Reagan served as First Lady when her husband was elected the 40th President ofthe United States in 1981; and
WHEREAS, An influential advisor and confidante to her husband, Nancy Reagan launched the "Just Say No" to drugs campaign; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Reagan was great source of strength, support and encouragement to the President following the 1981 assassination attempt; and
WHEREAS, After leaving the White House, Nancy and Ronald Reagan purchased a home in the East Gate Old Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles and spent time at their ranch in Santa Barbara; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Reagan's book, My Turn: The Memoirs of Nancy Reagan, was published in 1989; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Reagan cared for her husband during his ten-year struggle with Alzheimer's and raised money for research into the disease; and
WHEREAS, The passing in 2004 of President Reagan ended what actor Charlton Heston called "the greatest love affair in the history of the American presidency"; and
WHEREAS, The loyalty, sacrifice and dedication of Nancy Reagan serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, Nancy Reagan will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and
WHEREAS, To her children, Patti and Ronald, and her step-son, Michael, Nancy Reagan imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this sixteenth day of March, 2016, do hereby commemorate Nancy Reagan for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Nancy Reagan.
