RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Edward J. Godfrey has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 93; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Wheaton and a member of "Our Greatest Generation," Edward J. Godfrey was a decorated military veteran and the loving husband of Catherine; and

 

WHEREAS, Edward J. Godfrey was the much-adored father of Kerry Ann (U.S.A.F.- Ret.), Lt. Colonel Patrick (U.S.A.F.), Shannon and Edward and the grandfather of nine to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

 

WHEREAS, Edward J. Godfrey served as a United States Marine Corps pilot on five aircraft carriers during World War II and three aircraft carriers during the Korean War; and

 

WHEREAS, Edward J. Godfrey flew more than 1,000 hours in a Corsair and is featured in the book International Air Power Review, Volume 11 with a lead photo in the Korean War section; and

 

WHEREAS, Edward J. Godfrey volunteered during the Vietnam War and flew a night flare sensor and radio relay mission aboard a C-l 17; and

 

WHEREAS, Edward J. Godfrey achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and retired from the reserves in 1973 after having flown 150 combat missions, 38 different aircraft, 163 carrier landings and more than 4,000 hours during his career; and

 

WHEREAS, Edward J. Godfrey was a recipient of two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Bronze Star with Combat V, eight Air Medals, six Campaign Stars and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Edward J. Godfrey serve as an example to all; and

 

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Edward J. Godfrey to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Edward J. Godfrey was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Edward J. Godfrey imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this seventeenth day of January, 2018, do hereby commemorate Edward J. Godfrey for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
