Resolution Celebrating Sister Viola Terrell's 100"' Birthday

WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that the City Council of the City of Chicago is hereby informed about Sister Viola Terrell, an incredibly driven and altruistic individual, who js celebrating her Centennial birthday; and

WHEREAS, This esteemed body has been informed of this remarkable occasion by the Honorable Derrick G. Curtis, Alderman of the 18* Ward; and

WHEREAS, Born on August 23, 1918 in Greenwood, Mississippi, Sister Terrett was the adored daughter of the late Leonard and Hennie Mitchell and had eight siblings. She grew up in the Morgan Park community in Chicago where she attended John D. Schroop Elementary School. She also attended DuSablc High School and Madam Walker's Beauty Culture School simultaneously, soon after beginning her career as a beautician; and

WHEREAS, On April 29, 1949, Sister Terrett married the late Deacon Reginald Terrett. Together they joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church and later became members of Emmanuel Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, She has led a faithful life as a member of Emmanuel tinder die pastorale of Reverend Dr. L.K. Curry. She continued that work tinder the leadership of Pastor Rogers W. Jackson as an assistant attendant secretary of the Sunday School, secretary of the August Calendar Circle and treasurer of the Golden Agcrs auxiliary. She has been a member ot the Deaconess Board and the Usher's Ministry; and

WHEREAS, Sister Terrett began her journey as an usher when she was fifteen years old. During her life, she was an usher with the National Baptist Convention U.S.A., Inc., the Baptist General State Convention of Illinois and the Salem Baptist District Association where she scrv.es as supervisor of ushers. She has been a proud member of the United Church Ushers of America, Inc.; and<

WHEREAS, Sister Terrett even served the Lord as a doorkeeper in Hawaii, among many other places in the United States. One of her fondest memories was when she had the honor of being one of the ushers that led a thousand ushers into Carnegie Hall when the National Baptist Convention U.S.A., Inc. met in New York City; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of the rich history to which Sister Terrett has witnessed and contributed, the Chicago City Council believes that she is richly deserving of adulation and good wishes as she celebrates entering her 100th year of life; now, therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mavor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, gathered together this twentieth day of September, 2018, do hereby congratulate Sister Viola Terrett on her 100,h birthday and extend our very best wishes for many more birthdays to come.
