RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Don Edwards has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 100; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, A Democrat from San Jose, California, the Honorable Don Edwards championed civil rights during his more than three decades in Congress; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Don Edwards earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Stanford University and began his career as a Special Agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation; and

 

WHEREAS, During World War II, the Honorable Don Edwards served his country as an intelligence and gunnery officer for the United States Navy; and

 

WHEREAS, Following his honorable discharge, the Honorable Don Edwards returned home and worked in the insurance business; and

 

WHEREAS, In 1962 the Honorable Don Edwards was elected to the United States House of Representatives where he served until 1995; and

 

WHEREAS, During his long and highly distinguished tenure on Capitol Hill, the Honorable Don Edwards earned a reputation as a champion of civil rights and played an important role in convincing Congress to adopt the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Don Edwards served as a member of the House Judiciary Committee that forced the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Don Edwards opposed the nation's growing involvement in the Vietnam War, the invasion of Panama in 19,89 and the Persian Gulf war in 1991; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Don Edwards serve as an example to all; and

 

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Don Edwards will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable Don Edwards imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fourteenth day of October 2015, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Don Edwards for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Don Edwards.
