RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, Morley Safer has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 84; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of Manhattan, New York, Morley Safer was a widely admired member of the journalism community and the loving husband for 48 years of Jane; and

WHEREAS, Morley Safer was the much-adored father of Sarah Alice Anne and the grandfather of three to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Born in Toronto, Ontario, Morley Safer began his career as a print journalist working for newspaper and wire services in Canada and England before joining Canadian Broadcast Corp.; and

WHEREAS, Morley Safer enjoyed a long and highly successful career with the CBS television news magazine 60 Minutes and became its longest-serving correspondent; and

WHEREAS, Morley Safer won numerous awards, including 12 Emmys, three Overseas Press Club Awards, three Peabody Awards, two Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia University Awards, two George Polk Memorial Awards and the Paul White Award from the Radio/Television News Directors Association; and

WHEREAS, Morley Safer was widely known for his human interest stories and reported on everything from wars to every aspect of modern culture; and

WHEREAS, During his long and illustrious career, Morley Safer covered the Algerian War for Independence and was the only western correspondent in East Berlin the night the Communists began building the Berlin Wall in August 1961; and

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Morley Safer serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Morley Safer to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

 

WHEREAS, Morley Safer was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Morley Safer imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-second day of June, 2016, do hereby commemorate Morley Safer for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolutipfibe presented to the

family Morley Safer.
