RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Marjorie Collens has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 76; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of her passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Marjorie Collens was a former suburban elected official and the loving wife of Lewis; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Marjorie Collens was the much-adored mother of Steven and the dear sister of Terry and Robert; and

 

WHEREAS, Raised in the Albany Park neighborhood, the Honorable Marjorie Collens graduated from Von Stuben High School and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Marjorie Collens worked early in her career as an editor and freelance writer and became actively involved in community affairs; and

 

WHEREAS, Elected to office in 1983, the Honorable Marjorie Collens served as an Evanston Alderman for eight years and presided over a ward that included Evanston's two largest institutions, Northwestern University and Evanston Hospital; and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Marjorie Collens relocated to Chicago with her husband when he became President of the Illinois Institute of Technology; and

 

WHEREAS, A longtime patron of the arts, the Honorable Marjorie Collens was involved in the founding of the Chicago High School for the Arts (ChiArts); and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Marjorie Collens was Chairwoman of Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and a board member of the Chicago Foundation for Women, of WBEZ and of the Lincoln Park Zoo; and

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable Marjorie Collens serve as an example to all; and

 

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Marjorie Collens was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To her beloved family, the Honorable Marjorie Collens imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this thirteenth day of January, 2016, do hereby commemorate the Honorable Marjorie Collens for her grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to her family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable Marjorie Collens.
