SALUTE TO CHICAGO POLICE SERGEANT KEVIN SELLERS

 

WHEREAS. On Wednesday, November 17. 2021 at approximately 2: 20 pm, Sergeant Kevin Sellers was walking out of his house to go to work. I le observed a black, four door Ponliac Grand Prix with tinted windows drive west bound on West 61st Street and stop abruptly at South Mulligan Avenue. Shortly thereafter, a newer model dark colored SUV traveling in the same direction pulled up behind the Ponliac. Me continued to observe thc vehicle while the Pontiac turned south bound on South Mulligan Avenue ' while the dark SUV pulled slowly through the intersection. Sergeant Sellers was in the parkway next lo his vehicle when he heard several loud pops. He looked up and saw an individual wearing all black clothing with a face-covering sitting outside the passenger side window firing north bound which was the direction ofthe other vehicle. Sergeant Sellers took cover; and

 

WHERAS, The dark SUV drove west bound and the Pontiac continued southbound. Sergeant Sellers entered his vehicle and radioed an emergency over the Zone 6 channel. Sergeant Sellers began to follow the vehicle east bound through traffic on West 63rd Street while continuing to radio the details to thc dispatcher. Updates continued while Sergeant Sellers kept the vehicle in view from a safe distance. Additional units observed the vehicle at West 67th Street and South Cicero Avenue; and

 

WHERAS, The Pontiac turned north bound and eventually traveled back to the Clearing/Garfield Ridge Neighborhood. The Pontiac subsequently struck a parked car near West 63rtl Street and South Mason Avenue as il tried to drive through the bike lane, l ive offenders fled on foot from the vehicle while officers from the 861 Team and Beat 813 gave chase on foot. During this lime, officers from the SDSC room monitored ihe ShotSpotter alerts and PODS in thc area. Those officers were able to relay additional information during thc foot pursuit. Assist units from Summit and Bedford Park arrived to assist; and

 

This occurred before dismissal time for two local schools, which were placed on lockdown. Sergeant Sellers stayed with thc vehicle during the foot pursuit and observed two handguns in plain view inside the vehicle and one laying in front ofthe vehicle. After several short foot pursuits, officers from Beat 813 and Team 861 were able to place four offenders in custody and recover one additional weapon. One additional weapon was recovered outside Ihe passenger side ofthe Pontiac. One offender made good his escape. In total, four offenders were placed into custody and five handguns were recovered. Shell casings for a .40 caliber and .380 caliber were recovered at the original scene; and

 

 

WHERAS, Members ofthe 861 learn continued the investigation and processed the arrests. They were able to secure approval for felony weapons charges on all four offenders. The investigation also revealed that the offenders committed an aggravated carjacking in Stickney just before these events. Two offenders had previous serviceable warrants while one offender had been released in 2018 for an aggravated discharge of a firearm; and

Officer Michael Botica #8783 Bt. 861A, Officer Nicolas Morales Jr. #2719 Bt. 861B. Officer Brayan Jaurcgui #4894 Bt. 861B, Officer Daniel Collins #5869 Bt. 861E, Officer Roger Ferreira #7645 Bt. 861E, Officer Shane Richardson # 18421 Bt. 813. Officer Raul Rosales Jr. #9654 Bt. 813, Officer Martin Robin #15821 Bt. 802S. and Officer Robert White # 8068 Bt. 802S; and

 

WHERAS, The events of November 17th were not unique. The men and women ofthe Chicago Police Department disregard their own safety on a daily basis for the safety and well-being ofthe residents of Chicago: and

 

WHEREAS, The Honorable Marty Quinn. Alderman ofthe 13th Ward, has apprised this august body of Chicago Police Sergeant Kevin Sellers* courage and dedication to the Clearing/Garfield Ridge Neighborhood; now therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED. That we. the Mayor and members ofthe City of Chicago City Council, assembled here this 15th Day of December, 2021. do hereby salute Chicago Police Sergeant Kevin Sellers and the other officers involved on November 17lh.
