WHEREAS, Katherine Mocko was born on December 11,1920. She consequently will be celebrating her 100th birthday; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable Marty Quinn, Alderman of the 13th Ward, has apprised the members ofthe chamber of this remarkable woman's auspicious milestone; and
WHEREAS, Katherine Mocko was born in Czechoslovakia on December 12, 1920. She came to the United States when she was 17 years old, leaving her family to make a better life for herself; and
WHEREAS, Katherine Mocko learned English, became a citizen, and assimilated to life in the great United States. She worked as a domestic worker and then got a job in a picture frame factory. Katherine met her future husband Ernest Zeleny, who was a tool and die maker, at a Slovak dance hall located at 26th and Pulaski; and
WHEREAS, Katherine and Ernest Zeleny were married at Grace Lutheran Church and had one child, a girl named Terry. Katherine was a stay-at-home mom. She made home cooked meals every day. Best cook and baker ever! Friends always told her to open her own bakery; and
WHEREAS, In 1967, Ernest suddenly passed away. Katherine was a strong-willed woman and eventually went back to work as a cook in the Hubbard High School cafeteria until she retired; and
WHEREAS, Katherine's life was filled with a lot of good food, dancing, laughing and an absolute joy for living. To reach the milestone of 100 years of age is truly an amazing accomplishment. May God continue to bless Katherine with life, health and prosperity on this day and all days; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and members of the City of Chicago City Council, gathered together this sixteenth day of December, 2020, do hereby congratulate Mrs. Katherine Zeleny on her 100th birthday and extend our very best wishes for many more birthdays to come.
