RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable David F. Cargo, the youngest person to serve as Governor of New Mexico, has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 84; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable David F. Cargo was the beloved father of Veronica, David, Patrick, Elena and Eamon to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, Born in Dowagiac, Michigan, the Honorable David F. Cargo earned his bachelor's, master's and law degrees from the University of Michigan; and
WHEREAS, A proud veteran, the Honorable David F. Cargo served two years in the army during the Korean War; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable David F. Cargo represented an Albuquerque district as a Representative in the New Mexico State House from 1963 to 1966; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable David F. Cargo earned the moniker "Lonesome Dave" for his successful but maverick strategy of campaigning solo for governor in far-flung rural areas of New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, Known for his progressive politics and concern for the poor and working class, the Honorable David F. Cargo served as governor for two terms, from 1966 to 1970; and
WHEREAS, A man of great integrity and moral conviction, the Honorable David F. Cargo was involved in many worthy causes including those to foster literacy and build libraries in underserved areas of New Mexico; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable David F. Cargo serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable David F. Cargo to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable David F. Cargo imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-fourth day of July 2013, do hereby commemorate the Honorable David F. Cargo for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable David F. Cargo.
