RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Elie Wiesel has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 87; and

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

WHEREAS, A resident of New York, Elie Wiesel was the loving husband for 47 years of Marion; and

WHEREAS, Elie Wiesel was the much-adored father of Shlomo to whom he imparted many ofthe fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and

WHEREAS, Born in Sighet in Transylvania's Carpathian Mountains of Romania, Elie Wiesel was a boy in 1944 when the Nazis invaded his hometown during World War II and placed him and his family in ghettos; and

WHEREAS, Elie Wiesel and his family were moved to the horrific Auschwitz concentration camp where his mother and younger sister were killed; and

WHEREAS, Elie Wiesel was later sent with his father to the Buchenwald concentration camp; and

WHEREAS, Elie Wiesel survived the Holocaust and after the war became a journalist, educator and author who wrote 57 books; and

WHEREAS, Elie Wiesel is best known for his autobiography "Night" which recounted his experiences of the Holocaust and the horror of the Nazi death camps; and

WHEREAS, Additionally, Elie Wiesel was a professor for many years at prominent institutions, including Boston University, City University of New York and Columbia University; and

WHEREAS, Elie Wiesel was also was an activist who spoke out in support of Israel and condemned apartheid; and

WHEREAS, Elie Wiesel created the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity to combat indifference, intolerance and injustice and promote acceptance, understanding and equality; and

WHEREAS, In 1986 Elie Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work against violence, repression and racism, and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal; and

 

 

WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of Elie Wiesel serve as an example to all; and

WHEREAS, Elie Wiesel was an individual of great integrity and accomplishment who will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his relatives, friends and admirers; and

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Elie Wiesel imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twentieth day of July, 2016, do hereby commemorate Elie Wiesel for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a^suitable copy of this resolution be presented to
the family of Elie Wiesel.
