MEMORIAL RESOLUTION FOR WALTER G. KOEGLER

 

WHEREAS, It is with great sadness that the members of this Chamber learned of the death of Walter G. Koegler in November at the age of 96; and

 

WHEREAS, The City Council has been informed of Walter's passing by the Honorable Margaret Laurino, Alderman of the 39th Ward; and

 

WHEREAS, Walter was born on January 4th 1922 and as a young man he dutifully and proudly served in the Navy in World War II, willingly committing himself to preserving his country's freedoms; and

 

WHEREAS, Wally, lovingly known to by all, was the adored husband of the late Mary A. Koegler (nee Leemputte) who sadly pre-deceased him at age 89. Together they created a warm and loving family and raised them in the North Mayfair community of Chicago; and

 

WHEREAS, Wally leaves to cherish his memory: beloved children Thomas (Mary Ann), Timothy (Karen), Kathleen (William) Unverzagt, Kristine (Jeffery) Jozwik and Terrence; cherished grandchildren, Michael (Kelly) Koegler, Kristin (Geoff) Silverwood, Matthew (Erin) Koegler, Sarah (Carlos Jr.) Mendez, Lauren (Matthew Ihnen) Koegler, Carolyn (Salvator) Aloisio, Kathryn Koegler, Mark (Kaylee) Unverzagt, Luke (Rachel) Unverzagt, Julie Jozwik, John Jozwik and Eric Jozwik; precious great-grandchildren, Patrick, Marty, CeCe, Ruby, and Timothy Koegler, Maya and Jack Silverwood, Colton Koegler, Matthew, Emily and Elena Mendez, Gwendolyn and Samuel Aloisio, Christian, William, Brooke and Scarlett Unverzagt and Theo Unverzagt; loving uncle to many and treasured friends who had the pleasure of knowing him. Wally leaves a legacy of faith, dignity and love; and

 

WHEREAS, Wally exemplified a strong work ethic and deep commitment to his church and community throughout his life. He was owner and President of Illinois Insulation and Construction Company and a dedicated volunteer at St. Edward's Parish. He served the parish in multiple roles including: President Vice-President of St. Edward's Holy Name Society; as an energetic fundraiser for the annual Fall Festival fundraising effort; weekly usher for the church for more than three decades; Committeeman and Cub Master of St. Edwards Cub Scouts; and a supporter ofthe Troop for over two decades. In 1995, St. Edward's Holy Name Society honored Wally for his many years of service by presenting him with their Man of the Year Award; and

 

WHEREAS, Wally was inducted into the City of Chicago Senior Citizens Hall of Fame in 2002. Nominated by Alderman Laurino, he was among those chosen from over hundreds of entries submitted to the Department on Aging for his legacy of serving others; and

 

WHEREAS, Wally, was a person who touched the lives of many. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered for having led an authentic life of service to God, family, community, and country; now, therefore,

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and Members of the City Council of the City of Chicago, assembled on this twelfth day of December, 2018, do hereby extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Walter G. Koegler; and,

 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That suitable copies of this resolution are presented to the family of Walter G. Koegler as a sign of our honor, gratitude, and respect.
