RESOLUTION

 

 

WHEREAS, Yogi Berra has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 90; and

 

WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and

 

WHEREAS, Yogi Berra was a Hall of Fame catcher with the New York Yankees whose widespread popularity transcended the sport of baseball and made him one of America's most beloved figures; and

 

WHEREAS, Yogi Berra was a jovial figure whose tangled sayings and unintentional witticisms became as legendary as the man himself; and

 

WHEREAS, Yogi Berra coined such "Yogisms" as "When you come to a fork in the road, take it," "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded" and "It's deja vu all over again"; and

 

WHEREAS, The son of Italian immigrants, Yogi Berra was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and joined the Yankees in 1943 before serving in the United States Navy during World War II; and

 

WHEREAS, Yogi Berra made his Major League debut in 1946 and played with the Yankees during the team's heyday championship years of the 1940s and 1950s; and

 

WHEREAS, Despite his short height, Yogi Berra was known for both his strength as a catcher and his highly dependable power-hitting with 358 home runs; and

 

WHEREAS, During a baseball career that spanned 19 seasons, Yogi Berra played in a record 14 World Series and was on ten winning teams; and

 

WHEREAS, After retiring as a player, Yogi Berra worked in Major League Baseball as a manager and coach; and

 

WHEREAS, Following his highly illustrious baseball career, Yogi Berra became the much-recognized pitch-man for major products on television; and

 

WHEREAS, The talent, integrity and dedication of Yogi Berra serve as an example to all; and

 

 

WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared Yogi Berra to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and

 

WHEREAS, Yogi Berra will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his many relatives, friends and admirers; and

 

WHEREAS, To his beloved family, Yogi Berra imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore

 

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this fourteenth day of October 2015, do hereby commemorate Yogi Berra for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Yogi Berra.
