RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Honorable William W. Scranton, Jr. the former Republican Governor of Pennsylvania, has been called to eternal life by the wisdom of God at the age of 96; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of his passing by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable William W. Scranton, Jr. was the loving and devoted husband of Mary; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable William W. Scranton, Jr. was the beloved father of Susan, William, Joseph and Peter to whom he imparted many of the fine and noble qualities that he possessed in abundance; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable William W. Scranton, Jr. earned his bachelor and law degrees from Yale University; and
WHEREAS, A proud veteran, the Honorable William W. Scranton, Jr. was a pilot during World War II and rose to the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable William W. Scranton, Jr. served one term in Congress before winning election as the 38th Governor of Pennsylvania in 1962; and
WHEREAS, The Honorable William W. Scranton, Jr. laid the groundwork for the future prosperity of his state with an ambitious and wide-ranging agenda that included creating a community college system, establishing a State Board of Education, expanding the state park system, beginning extensive highway construction and restructuring the civil service system; and
WHEREAS, Known for his progressive politics and commitment to civil rights, the Honorable William W. Scranton, Jr. undertook a noble effort to win the Republican nomination for the 1964 presidential election against the Honorable Barry Goldwater; and
WHEREAS, A man of great integrity and moral conviction, the Honorable William W. Scranton, Jr. was involved in many worthy causes and held several important appointments in government and private industry; and
WHEREAS, The hard work, sacrifice and dedication of the Honorable William W. Scranton, Jr. serve as an example to all; and
WHEREAS, His love of life and ability to live it to the fullest endeared the Honorable William W. Scranton, Jr. to his family members, friends and all who knew him, and enabled him to enrich their lives in ways they will never forget; and
WHEREAS, To his beloved family, the Honorable William W. Scranton, Jr. imparts a legacy of faithfulness, service and dignity; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this eleventh day of September, 2013, do hereby commemorate the Honorable William W. Scranton, Jr. for his grace-filled life and do hereby express our condolences to his family; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be presented to the family of the Honorable William W. Scranton, Jr.
