RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Edward F. McElroy, a widely admired Chicago civic leader and media personality, celebrated the joyful occasion of his 90th Birthday on July 20, 2015; and
WHEREAS, The Chicago City Council has been informed of this event by Alderman Edward M. Burke; and
WHEREAS, Raised in Visitation Parish, Edward F. McElroy served his country during World War II and is a Past National Commander and Past State Commander of the Catholic War Veterans of the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, In 1955 Edward F. McElroy married his wife, Rita Marie, at a wedding attended by two Chicago mayors, Martin Kennelly and Richard J. Daley; and
WHEREAS, Edward F. McElroy is able to call everyone by his or her first name, from the highest elected official to the neighborhood crossing guard; and
WHEREAS, The stories and narratives surrounding the colorful life and career of Edward F. McElroy pay testament to the belief that who you know often makes a difference as you navigate through life; and
WHEREAS, In 1959 Edward F. McElroy was called upon by Mayor Richard J. Daley to pick up then-U.S. Senator John F. Kennedy from the airport and ended up dining with him on Rush Street; and
WHEREAS, Many decades later, Edward F. McElroy also gave another future president a ride in his Cadillac, then-Illinois State Senator Barack Obama, whom he drove home from an event and for whom he provided a tour of community newspapers; and
WHEREAS, A true gentleman of extraordinary integrity and intellect, Edward F. McElroy has been active in the field of Chicago radio news and sports and in television for more than 65 years; and
WHEREAS, Edward F. McElroy has reported for stations including WJOB, WIND and WJJD and has been the host of "Community in Focus" and the "Ed McElroy Show" on Comcast Channel 19 in the City and in the suburbs; and
WHEREAS, A consultant and public relations executive, Edward F. McElroy heads Edward F. McElroy & Associates and for many decades has effectively served his clients, aided by his vast knowledge of both Chicago and its people; and
WHEREAS, Edward F. McElroy is an individual who is exceedingly worthy of our great admiration and esteem; now, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the Mayor and the members of the Chicago City Council, assembled this twenty-ninth day of July, 2015, do hereby congratulate Edward F. McElroy on the occasion of his 90th Birthday and do hereby declare that July 29, 2015, shall be officially recognized as Edward F. McElroy Day throughout the City of Chicago; and
